FIBAA History

Foundation

FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation) was established in the fall of 1994 by leading business associations from Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. It was founded as a non-profit international foundation with the mission of promoting transparency and quality in the education sector. FIBAA is an accreditation agency responsible for the academic and content-based evaluation of study programs, specifically those leading to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as institutional accreditation of higher education institutions both in Germany and internationally.

Initially, FIBAA’s expertise focused on programs in economics, law, and social sciences. However, from 2009 onward, its scope expanded to encompass other fields, including engineering, IT, education, and the natural sciences, as well as additional types of programs.

Accreditation in Europe and Beyond

FIBAA conducted its first program accreditation in 1996. In 2000, it was accredited by the German Accreditation Council. In 2002, FIBAA became a full member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA). Today, FIBAA is recognized as a quality assurance agency in several European countries, including Austria, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, as well as internationally in regions such as Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Türkiye.

Expansion of FIBAA’s Quality Seal Portfolio

Since 2000, FIBAA has developed its own quality seals. Initially, these seals covered program and institutional accreditation. In 2010, FIBAA introduced certification for continuing education courses. By 2022, FIBAA launched the "Excellence in Digital Education"® Quality Seal, aimed at highlighting the digital transformation efforts of higher education institutions and educational providers. The FIBAA Quality Seal „Excellence in Digital Education“® has been a registered trademark in Switzerland and in the EU.
