About Hobéon
Founded in 1992, Hobéon is a strategic consultancy that operates in the Netherlands. Hobéon offers a wide range of services and support to educational institutions at various levels. The services provided include consultancy, accreditation and certification, personal certification, and training. Experienced consultants work closely with schools, colleges, universities, businesses, and professionals to help them realise their ambitions and meet ever-changing demands and expectations.
The Importance of Sustainability Certification in Higher Education
The attainment of the Sustainable Higher Education (SHE) certificate through Hobéon, alongside FIBAA accreditation, provides recognition for current institutional efforts while fostering future advancements. It offers actionable insights for educational programmes to enhance sustainability practices, aligning with their mission and vision. Crucially, the framework catalyses development and change, fostering ongoing dialogue and collaboration towards sustainability goals.
The SHE framework employs a five-star rating system, referring to different levels of sustainability integration. Ranging from sporadic actions to societal impact, each level signifies progress towards comprehensive sustainability integration.
The assessment process entails:
-
self-evaluation,
-
document submission, and
-
onsite audits involving stakeholders.
Feedback provided facilitates further enhancement of sustainability efforts and attainment of higher certification levels.
The certification process addresses critical questions:
-
What does it mean to be labelled 'sustainable'?
-
How does sustainability manifest in the curriculum?
-
Are educators adequately versed in sustainability and the SDGs? Do students prioritise sustainability in their education, and how are they guided in doing so?
Ensuring Sustainable Education through the SHE Assessment Framework
In an era where sustainability holds increasing significance, education assumes a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development. Embracing the UNESCO's objectives in education, the Sustainable Higher Education (SHE) framework is an instrument aimed at advancing SDG objectives within higher education institutions.
Developed by Hobéon based on the SDGs, the SHE framework is a quality measurement tool that aims to establish sustainability as a fundamental component of education, equipping students globally to tackle pressing environmental and social challenges. Endorsed by FIBAA, our joint mission is to mainstream sustainability in education, a commitment underscored by our partnership.
The SHE Framework in Action
The SHE framework evaluates sustainability initiatives across diverse dimensions, including curriculum design, research activities, and community engagement. It advocates for a systematic approach, integrating sustainability into teaching, research, and service functions. Emphasis is placed on collaboration with external stakeholders, ensuring tangible societal impact beyond the campus.
Impact
The SHE assessment framework enables programmes to obtain a Sustainable Higher Education (SHE) Certificate, distinguishing them and demonstrating their alignment with contemporary needs. No educational programme has achieved a five-star SHE certificate to date. Nevertheless, SHE-certification signals a commitment to sustainable education and future endeavours.
